Entertaining Orange County Since 1973
The following is a transcript of the speech given by charter band member Lloyd Glick at the party celebrating the 30th anniversary of the band in March 2003 at the Meadowlark Golf Club ballroom.
In the fall of 1972, the idea of a community concert band first came into the mind of Mr. John Mason, then the band director at Marina High School. We don't know how such an idea came to him. We do know that in October of that year he started to act on that idea by contacting the directors of the Riverside Community Band, which had been active in that community for years, and the Orange Community Band (now the Orange Symphonic Band.) He sought ideas and suggestions from each of them, He also contacted Local 7 of the AFM, and was further encouraged to proceed. With his idea solidified and supported, Mason approached members of the city government. At a meeting of the city council on January 2nd, 1973, the city administrator requested a resolution to form a city band and an authorization of $15,000 toward that organization. Six council members voted for the requested resolution. One member, the mayor, dissented. On January 15th, resolution No. 3634 was passed and affirmatively signed by all of the council. This resolution was the real beginning of the Huntington Beach Concert Band.
